A.D. Rattray
A. D. Rattray Cask Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky 46% 70cl
A.D. Rattray was founded in 1868 by Andrew Dewar and William Rattray as an importer of wines, spirits and olive oils from France and Italy. However, similar to a number of other importers and grocers at the time the business began to delve into blending and bottling Scotch whiskies for the region, working closely with local distilleries. During the market collapse of the early 1900s the business was sold and traded mainly in the West of Scotland, until Tim Morrison, a 4th generation descendent of Andrew Dewar and head of Morrison Bowmore Distillers, bought the company back into family ownership in 2004. A.D. Rattray has since become a highly regarded independent bottler of more unsusual whisky releases - but they are offer a range of 'entry-level' single malt releases that provide an introduction to Scotch whisky regions for newer drinkers.
Cask Islay features everything you'd expect from an Islay whisky - a distinct smokiness that is upfront and tinged with sea salt and a fresh citrus note. Sherry casks have been used to some extent judging by the hints of raisin and prune in the mid-palate but there's also a touch of vanilla cream that implies ex-Bourbon barrels too. Most 'indie' Islay bottlings are sourced from Caol Ila, and it's certainly possible that this is one, but given the close links between A.D. Rattray and Bowmore there's every chance this is from that distillery as well. Either way, it's a belter, and a great example of what this distinctive region can offer!
