Arran Amarone Cask Finish 50% 70cl
The Arran (also known as Lochranza) Distillery was founded in 1994 - with production commencing the following year - by Harold Currie, who was previously Managing Director at Chivas. The most recent legal distillery on the island was called Lagg and closed in 1837 - although the owners of Arran opened a new 'Lagg' distillery in 2019.The core house style is a light and fruity profile, which makes it excellent for picking up influences from casks that have held different types of wines or spirits. Following an initial 8 or so years maturation - annoyingly Arran themselves claim maturation takes place in a meaningless term of 'traditional oak casks' but given the house style I'm sticking my neck out and saying these are ex-Bourbon barrels - the whisky is then finished in casks that previously held Amarone wines from the Veneto region of Italy.
Amarone is a top-notch red wine full of rich dark fruit character and while there aren't many Amarone finished whiskies in the world, those that do exist are stunning, and this is no exception. There's notes of dark chocolate covered cherries, dried cranberries and plum pudding throughout, and it's an absolute joy to drink.
