Brother's Bond
Brother's Bond Blended Rye Whiskey 47.5% 75cl
Sourced from the MGP Distillery in Indiana (although their own distillery is planned at some point), the mashbill for the Bourbon is a four-grain recipe that uses 65% corn, 22% rye and an undisclosed split of barley and wheat. In order to be called Bourbon, it's matured in virgin American oak barrels for a minimum of 4 years, before being married in batches of never more than 45,000 bottles.
I was able to try the Cask Strength and Rye releases at an excellent restaurant near Orlando, which helped me make the easy decision to get my hands on some for the shop!
The Rye release is a limited edition bottling featuring a mashbill of 77% rye, 16% corn and again an undeclared split of wheat and barley. On the nose there is high-cocoa dark chocolate, orange peel, dried chili flakes and a touch of menthol. The palate is surprisingly spicy, with cracked black pepper and toasted sourdough bread coming through while the mint element continues. It softens slightly on the finish, with hints of candied peels arriving. I think I prefer this to the Bourbon, particularly that orange-y note adding interest. It's a belter in an Old Fashioned, too!
