The Carthusian Order of Monks was founded in 1084 by Bruno of Cologne, and just over 500 years later in 1605 the French Artillery to the King presented the monks with a manuscript containing the formula for 'an elixir of long life'. The monks began to work on a recipe and in 1737 Brother Jerome Maubec created 'The Herbal Elixir of the Grande Chartreuse' - the home of the Order. What is now known as 'Green Chartreuse' was evolved from this by Brother Antoine a few decades later, and to this day only two monks are privy to the secret recipe, which involves extracts from 132 different botanicals, with the distinctive colour derived from the chlorophyll in the plants that are used.
The facility that produces Chartreuse boasts it has the longest liqueur cellar in the world, and some of the barrels that are used to age and macerate the liquid are over 100 years old.
The 'original' Green Chartreuse is bottled at a whopping 55% ABV - a Yellow version is milder, sweeter and bottled at a lower strength of 43%. This, however, is full-on from minute one - massive herbal notes, mint, aniseed and pepper fight one another to come to the fore. It's too much for a lot of drinkers and that's perfectly understandable - it's to be taken as a small digestif to settle the stomach. But it does work incredibly well as a cocktail ingredients when used sparingly - such as a wash before constructing the rest of a drink.

Orders weighing up to a max of 2kg will be charged £5.99, and orders weighing over 2kg will be charged £7.99. ANY PURCHASE OVER £150 WILL RECEIVE FREE SHIPPING.
PLEASE NOTE: The Spirit Specialist is CLOSED on Sundays and Mondays - all orders are collected by Royal Mail the day after they are packaged up. As such, if you place an order on a Saturday, Sunday or Monday, your order will be packaged up on the following Tuesday at re-opening, and then collected by Royal Mail on the Wednesday morning. PLEASE BEAR THIS IN MIND IF YOU ARE WORKING TO A DEADLINE!

All orders are sent on a Tracked service with Royal Mail, which provides a Tracking Number for you to follow its journey to your destination.

All products are securely packaged in Air-Shock bottle bags or frankly excessive amounts of bubble wrap for additional protection.
All goods must be examined at the time of delivery and any damages or shortage must be recorded on the relevant delivery acceptance forms with the delivery. Un-examined or un-checked goods that result in a subsequent claim outside of a 48 hour period will not be accepted. Queries relating to claims must be made within 48 hours of receiving the goods, otherwise claims cannot be guaranteed.
