Citadelle Gin 70cl
Citadelle was created by Alexandre Gabriel, owner of Maison Ferrand, a highly regarded Cognac house. Restrictions imposed by the Cognac AOC meant that the copper pot stills stood dormant between April and October, and after five years of negotiations Alexandre managed to get authorisation to instead distill gin during this time period. Launched in 1996, CItadelle was one of the first gins to move drinkers away from Gordons and begin the gin boom that we see today.
Citadelle starts off fresh and citrussy, but on the nose and in the mouth. But it develops on both occasions too - on the nose that citrus begins to have an underlying floral note, whereas on the palate a sweet spiciness arrives, turning almost peppery at the finish. It's bright and fresh, and one can see why it causes gin drinkers to realise there was much more to the spirit all those years ago. It's a perfect 'sunny day' gin, will pair with almost any tonic and if you're making a gin cocktail that requires a citrus note will be a perfect base.
