60 miles up the coast North of Inverness, the Clynelish Distillery was originally founded in 1819 by the first Duke of Sutherland, who drove out farmers during the ‘Clearances’ – a shocking period in Scottish history when landowners realised they could earn more money grazing sheep than the rent and taxes from people living and working the land for themselves in crofts.

However, technically the bottle label should read ‘Clynelish B’ – in 1968 a second distillery was built over the road and named Clynelish B. The original Clynelish would be renamed Brora in 1969 and ultimately closed in 1983 – although owners Diageo then reopened it in 2021 as it becamse massively in demand and a true cult brand.

Clynelish is a distillery even more remote than most. It is also the natural habitat to the elusive Scottish wildcat, Felix Sylvestris. Few of these evanescent creatures remain and rarely are they seen, but the wildcat symbol is emblazoned on the Clynelish distillery, guarding it for all time.

It's a distillery also well known and highly regarded for a rich, waxy character - notes of honey and beeswax abound, with a full texture in the mouth. 14 might appear to be an odd age for a 'core' bottling but this is nigh on perfect, particularly at 46% ABV too, as any lower would dilute that texture too much.

It's an incredible whisky and definitely one to take your time over with as little distraction as possible!
