Cocchi
Cocchi Americano Aromatized Wine 16.5% 70cl
Nothing to do with a strong coffee from Starbucks, Cocchi Americano is so named from the Italian word for making alcohol bitter ('amaricayo') and the American style of drinking vermouth with ice and soda as a spritz.
The liquid itself is a blending of white wine with a selection of herb, fruit and spice extracts - Gentian, Artemisia, Cinchona and citrus peel.
You may have heard of a 'Vesper Martini' - a cocktail made famous in the James Bond novel 'Casino Royale'. The text is thus:
'A dry martini,' he said. 'One. In a deep champagne goblet.'
'Oui, monsieur.'
'Just a moment. Three measures of Gordon's, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it's ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel. Got it?'
'Certainly monsieur.' The barman seemed pleased with the idea.
'Gosh, that's certainly a drink,' said Leiter.
Kina Lillet is sadly no longer available, and the replacement Lillet Blanc is considered a much inferior version. However, Cocchi Americano, with it's increased note of bitterness, has long been thought of as the perfect replacement, so if you want to emulate Monsieur Bond, this is the aperitif for you!
