Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor is considered one of the forefathers of Bourbon whiskies, founding the Old Fire Copper Distillery in 1869 which would eventually be known as the Buffalo Trace Distillery from 1992.

Taylor brought innovation to the industry, credited with the likes of copper fermentation tanks, still design, sour mash technique improvements, and steam-heated cycled rack houses. Perhaps Taylor, along with his contemporaries and acquaintances in the Bourbon industry, is most famous for his political lobbying to ensure the new Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897. Consumers would finally be given an indication of quality and authenticity for the whiskey they bought during a time when producers and wholesales would sell altered, counterfeit, or even dangerous products.

In honour of E.H. Taylor, Buffalo Trace owners Sazerac released a series of whiskies in his name. The Small Batch BIB uses the Buffalo Trace mashbill #1, which is low-rye recipe, with aging around 4 years. The result is on the sweeter side, with molasses and red fruits coming through, with a hit of cracked peppercorns and even a touch of citrus to ensure this isn't too one-note. It's a quality sipper but makes a great Old Fashioned and Manhattan.
