Connoisseurs Choice (Gordon and MacPhail)
G&M Connoisseurs Choice Glendullan 2009 12yo Cote Rotie Finish 45% 70cl
Glendullan is a Speyside distillery which originally opened in 1897 - it has a light, grassy style which is excellent for blending, although owners Diageo do bottle it as a Single Malt under the 'Singleton of...' banner.
New make spirit from Glendullan was filled into refill ex-Bourbon barrels in 2009 by Gordon & MacPhail, who then transferred the spirit into casks that had previously held Cote Rotie wines for 3 years before bottling. Cote Rotie is a northern Rhone appellation using the Syrah (aka Shiraz) grape, although 20% Viognier can be used as well. The wines tend to be big and bold, but with a softly floral or fragrant edge.
The light profile of Glendullan makes it ideal for offering the full effect of cask finishing - particularly when a quarter of it's life has been 'finished'. There's clear red berry notes throughout but the finish starts to introduce a spicier note of white and black pepper along with a slight nuttiness. It's a fantastic example of what the team at G&M are able to achieve with careful monitoring of cask maturation.
