Fielden
Fielden Rye Whisky 48% 70cl
So there's a bit of a complicated story to this one. The Oxford Artisan Distillery had already grown a good reputation when things were thrown up in the air in 2024 after it was announced that the distillery would be moving to Yorkshire, and rebranding as 'Fielden', with an emphasis on regenerative farming and heritage grains.
Turns out this new distillery was to be based in Goole - which isn't even 5 miles away from The Spirit Specialist. Obvioulsy when I heard this news I was instantly intrigued - but things seem have gotten messy. The venutre was funded in part by Distill Ventures, a drinks business accelerator programme with heavy investment from Diageo - who in early 2025 then pulled out due to the nature of the global market. This put Distill in a bind, which in turn has had a major knock-on effect on the businesses involved with it.
As of writing this in May 2025, Fielden seems to be a little bit up in the air. They had a LOT of marketing spend including almost constant sponsored post on the likes of Amazon, and it was clear this was being branded as a premium brand looking for a mass market. But that costs money, and if the source of the money disappears, it's difficult to know what to do next.
From I've been told, existing stocks of Fielden Rye was produced at The Oxford Artisan Distillery, and the new distillery in Goole isn't yet fully up and running. BUT the liquid in the bottle is REALLY good. I've grown to love rye whiskies over time, and this has a superb balance of spicy notes along with more fruity and almost floral notes - orange oil, dark chocolate, jasmine, cracked black pepper, there's LOADS going on in both aroma and palate, and it's makes a belting Old Fashioned too. I've even hosted a tasting event in the US when I included this without telling the audience, and they were absolutely amazed this was from England. The 48% ABV is a masterstroke too, adding to the spiciness without overpowering the softer tones.
I really hope Fielden manages to figure out a way through the current issues and continue to produce spirit, because this is bloody great!
