Glenallachie 10yo Cask Strength Batch 7 56.8% 70cl
Purchased from Chivas in 2017 by whisky blender and entrepreneur Billy Walker - who had previously revitalised Benriach and Glendronach - Glenallachie has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity since it's relaunch in 2018, mainly thanks to a core selection which have been consistently excellent thanks to a dedicated focus on wood quality for maturation - care and attention is given to every cask in their 16 warehouses both before and after being filled with spirit.
The end result is a range of whiskies more often than not packed full of deep dark fruit flavours partnered with rich spicy notes.
In 2021, the Batch 4 edition of the 10yo Cask Strength bottling was awarded 'World Whisky of the Year' at the World Whisky Awards, cementing what was already a great reputation. As a result, subsequent batches have high expectation and with no surprise high demand!
Batch 7 continues not to disappoint. Bottled at a hefty 56.8%, this is spirit matrued in a combination of Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez Sherry barrels, along with a small amount that spent time in Virgin oak and Rioja wine barriques.
That slight wine influence add to the rich fruit notes, with distinct notes of prunes and stewed plums that have been concentrated down. There's underlying chocolate flavours, darker than milk, but not high-cocoa dark, supported by a dusting of cinnamon and even a touch of orange oil. Just a drop of water releases further sweet fruit but to be honest this drinks brilliantly neat, taking time to savour every sip.
Billy Walker celebrates 50 working as a blender in the Scotch whisky industry this year (2022) and it's very safe to say he has not lost his skill. What an incredible whisky.
