G&M CRN57 Vision Blended Malt Scotch Whisky 40% 70cl
Established as a grocery store in 1895, Gordon & MacPhail quickly became involved in purchasing new make spirit from whisky distilleries around Scotland to mature in their own selected casks. Now in the 4th generation of family ownership and still fiercely independent, G&M offer a range of fantastic quality whiskies that can't be matched by other independent bottlers, who rely on purchasing casks of already matured whisky to bottle and sell - G&M are doing everything but the actual distilling, ensuring a care of cask management from day one and using over 100 years of relationships built up with distilleries, wineries and bodegas.
Impeccable care and attention is taken to ensure the whisky is of the highest quality, and on a regular occasion you can find some absolute bargains compared to 'official' releases, due to the fact they are often perceived as 'inferior' releases due to the lack of any official branding. As it happens, the liquid is often way better than mainstream bottlings, and G&M price their releases at a level which encourages drinking and enjoying rather than setting aside to make money.
In 1995 G&M purhcased the nearby Benromach Distillery to future-proof the business and delves into whisky production. Benromach is known for hand-crafted whisky made in a traditional style, but in the mid-2010s G&M decided to expand into a new venture - this time not purchasing an existing distillery but building one from scratch. The polar opposite of Benromach, The Cairn DIstillery is modern through and through, and while the team waits for stocks to fully mature a range of Blended Malts have been made available, taking advantage of the vast portfolio G&M hold.
CRN57 (so named becuase the distillery is sited 57 degrees North of the Equator) aims to give an indication of the The Cairn whiskies will ultimately taste like, with an emphasis on a fruit-forward flavour profile. 'Vision' is an unaged entry level release, with surprisingly zingy notes of citrus fruit and tangy berries, heightened with warm oak. It makes a great Whisky Sour too!
