'Speymalt' is the brand name of any Macallan that has been released from independent maturers Gordon & MacPhail. Based in Elgin, G&M purchase new make spirit direct from distilleries and mature in their own selection of casks, thanks to over 100 years of relationships built up with distilleries, wineries and bodegas.

Impeccable care and attention is taken to ensure the whisky is of the highest quality, and on a regular occasion you can find some absolute bargains compared to 'official' releases, due to the fact they are often perceived as 'inferior' releases due to the lack of any official branding. As it happens, the liquid is often way better than mainstream bottlings, and G&M price their releases at a level which encourages drinking and enjoying rather than setting aside to make money.

So here we have a 19yo Macallan matured in a single first-fill Sherry cask with an outturn of only 313 bottles. As with the earlier Cask #1178 that came out earlier this year, there's incredibly intense dark fruit and rich spice notes, which drink really well neat but do benefit from just the merest drop of water.

It's yet more evidence that G&M are masters of maturation, and arguably offer more depth and complexity to Macallan spirit that the actual distillery owners do...
