Hinch Pot Still Irish Whiskey 70cl
The Hinch Distillery in County Down, Northern Ireland is located 25mins south of Belfast in the grounds of the beautiful Killaney Estate. The distillery takes its name from the nearby town of Ballynahinch, whose name in Irish translates as ‘town of the island’. The distillery itself only opened last year – founded by local businessman Terry Cross who pumped £15million of his own money into the project. So their current whiskey bottlings are spirit sourced from other Irish distilleries, but that's not to say the quality still isn't high.
Pot Still Whiskey is arguably the 'soul' of Irish whiskey. Unlike Scotch (and most other Single Malt whisky producers) that use just malted barley, Irish Pot Still production also add unmalted barley (also known as 'green' barley) into the still. This produces a distinctive flavour profile akin to juicy berries - personally, I always liken it to blackcurrant Opal Fruits (or Starburst if you're a young 'un)
In this case, that juiciness is full on and up front. There's a delicious mouthwatering element, but interestingly as a small proportion of oats are also added to the mash there's also a subtle creamy note which adds an extra dimension.
