James Eadie
James Eadie Trade Mark X Blended Scotch Whisky 45.6% 70cl
The James Eadie brewery was founded in 1854 - James also inherited a recipe for a blended Scotch whisky from his father and the business expanded into wines and spirits sales along with ownership of a considerable numbers of pubs. Eadie's great-great-grandson Rupert Patrick founded James Eadie Whiskies after several years in the trade, and the business has produced a number of independent bottlings.
Rupert used old paperwork and samples from the very few remaining bottles of Trade Mark X dating back to the 1940s to reproduce the flavour profile that was so popular in the late 1800s. Bottled at 45.6%, there is a rich, silky texture and a hint of sweet smoke in the background, before malt and toffee sweep in to coat the mouth. This is an immensely drinkable blend but that hint of smoke lifts the complexity and ensures the finish is long and distinguished. If you've ever had the opportunity to try a whisky from pre-1940s - where arguably blends were at their most intricate and flavourful - you'll find this more than similar.
