The Nc'nean Distillery was founded by Annabel Thomas in March 2017 - she was previously a consultant in London but a distillery road trip around Scotland persuaded her to up sticks and create a distillery with a difference – it's the first fully organic distillery powered by 100% renewable energy. The wood chips for the biomass boiler are sourced from a local forest, while all by-products are recycled as animal and plant feed on Drimin Estate where the distillery is located. The glass for the bottles is also 100% recycled.
The name Nc'nean (pronounced Nik-nee-ann) comes from Neachneohain, the Queen of Spirits in Gaelic legend. Neachneohain was a huntress: strong, independent and never afraid to walk her own path - she was also a fierce protector of nature.

The yeast in this particular instance is normally used in the production of rum, and as you might expect there is a slightly fruity note to this particular dram. Maturation in a combination of 61% STR red wine casks and 39% ex-Bourbon barrels accentuates the sweeter notes of , but there is still a sprightly liveliness thanks to the young age - distillation took place in August of 2018 with disgorging taking place on 3rd March 2022, with a total of 4447 bottles being released.
