Plantation Isle of Fiji Rum 40% 70cl
Maison Ferrand is one of the most highly regarded Cognac houses, and during the travels of Chairman Alexandre Gabriel around the world to sell the high quality spirit and negotiate cask purchases for maturation, he discovered stocks of amazing quality rum that were waiting to be bottled. In order to gain grace with those distilleries and cask owners (and also pay cheaper costs) Gabriel set up the Plantation brand, in which cask of rum from around the Caribbean are sent to France to be cared for, married, finished - whatever needs doing to ensure the best quality product ends up in bottle.
The Isle of Fiji release was originally distilled in the only operating rum distillery on Fiji, using only Fijian sugar cane molasses aged initially on the island for around three years before being transported to Maison Ferrand and transferred to ex-Cognac barrels for another year. There's a delicate funkiness on the nose, almost as though there was a small amount of classic Jamaican rum that snuck it's way into the glass, before a lovely finish of cracked black pepper and sweet honey. It's a brilliant cocktail rum, ideal for a Mai Tai, but sips beautifully from the freezer.
