Launched in late 2020, RY3 whiskey is the brand name for California-based Phenomanel Spirits who also release Ron Izalco rums. Their whiskies are a selection of sourced spirits from a variety of distilleries across the US and Canada - and while sourced whiskies can be a bone of contention for some people, if you can get it right you can release some AMAZING bottles.

It's unusual to find American spirits with a decent age statement on, simply due to the loss of liquid through cask evaporation caused by the higher temperatures. So I was delighted to find this 16yo that was a barrel pick by my good friend Marcia Wells, who owns the 1st Avenue Liquors store in St. Petersburg, Florida - this is also the first barrel pick from RY3 to be available in the state.

Marcia has a sweet tooth, so her barrel picks tend to err on that side, but this particular release - using spirit sourced from MGP in Indiana with a mashbill of 99% corn and 1% malted barley - has a distinct herbal note to start with that is indicative of MGP spirit. However it then changes into a much fruitier note with a lot of sweet citrus, almost akin to orange cream soda - probably due to that good amount of time spent in virgin oak barrels. It's a really distinctive flavour profile that's unlike anything I've come across before, which is probably why I like it so much!

Oh, and calling it 'Light Whiskey' is a bit of a misnomer - the term is used to denote the mashbill being so corn heavy. But at 68.3% this is clearly anything BUT light, although it does still drink really well without water!
