Sagamore
Sagamore Signature Rye Whiskey 41.5% 70cl
Based in Baltimore, Maryland, Sagamore Spirits was founded in 2013 and named after a farm on the banks of the Patapsco River. The ‘1909’ on the bottle references the year the springhouse was built – the brand also emphasises that Maryland water that is used to dilute their spirits. Maryland has been making rye whiskey since way before Kentucky even became a state (1792) and Sagamore want to promote the state as the ‘home’ of rye whiskey.
REALITY CHECK. Sagamore Spirits was created and owned by CEO of Under Armour – Kevin Plank. There's been LOTS of money plugged into this venture – a distillery was opened in 2017, which means this liquid to date is in fact Midwest Grain Products (MGP), Indiana whiskey. However this will eventually be replaced by Sagamore’s own spirit, which is due late 2021.
Sagamore's whiskies use a blend of MGP mashbills – 95% Rye/5% Barley is their main mashbill, but it also uses a 51% Rye/45% Corn/4% Barley and 51% Rye/49% Barley combination - it's not known what the ratios are, but the aim is to provide a sweeter, lighter style of rye whiskey that Maryland is better known for. The age is around 4 years old.
