Savage & Cooke
Savage & Cooke Second Glance American Whiskey 44% 75cl
Dave Phinney is a California-based winemaker better known for the Orin Swift Cellars range of fine wines - but in late 2018 he branched out into whiskey production, using his wine casks to finish off sourced Bourbon and American whiskeys before bottling in highly distinctive carafes.
Second Glance is a five year old whiskey with a mashbill of 95% corn, 4% rye and 1% malted barley from an unknown Kentucky distillery - it's not a Bourbon however as the spirit was aged in used Bourbon barrels as opposed to a virgin oak cask. It is finished for around 6 months in Cabernet Sauvignon casks, which add a distinct deep red berry note to a flavour profile already somewhat full of 'dark' notes - there's cinnamon, almost burnt caramel, toasted nuts and butter that's been melted in a frying pan. It's a fantastic whiskey, offering something slightly unusual but still incredibly drinkable, although I do think it's better enjoyed on it's own as opposed to putting in something like an Old Fashioned - it still works, but you do lose the intricacies within the spirit.
As this is not officially distributed in the UK, I only have 1 bottle available of this, so don't miss out!
