Supasawa

Well, this is definitely somethig different.

Billed as an alternative to fresh lemons and limes, Supsasawa is a fascinating amalgamation of distilled water (which seems pointless, but it does remove a lot of impurities), citric acid, malic acid, tartaric acid, succinic acid, phosphoic acid, a little bit of sugar and a touch of salt.

The end result is a completely clear liquid with no aroma whatsoever, and zero alcohol. It seems fairly unassuming, until you touch a drop to your lips, which then explodes into a blaze of sharp citrus.

Produced for bartenders and home mixologists who don't want to be dealing with mountains of sliced citrus fruit all over the place, this is absolutely a great alternative if you need a citrus kick running through a cocktail. However, lemon and lime actually do provide a flavour of their own, which this doesn't quite manage to replicate. So in the likes of a Whisky Sour, where the brown spirit is the main attraction and the citrus provides a kick at the start, this is perfect. But it's less effective in a Daiquiri with white rum, where the lime flavour is a main partner in the drink as opposed to a background effect.

Oh, and DO NOT drink it on its own. It's fascinating to try just a drop, but this is not something to be downed as a shot - it ain't fun!
