Based just 20 minutes North-east of Newquay, the Southwestern Distillery was founded by Tarquin Leadbetter in 2012. Previously a classically trained chef, Tarquin left a desk job in London to pursue a dream of opening the first distillery in his homeland of Cornwall for over 100 years.
Recognising the growth of gin at the time, Tarquin is completely self-taught, selling his first bottle of gin in July 2013. His first still was originally heated with a large gas ring that was used for his paella pan - the operation now has 4 stills (named Tamara, Senara, Tressa and Ferrara) that are all heated with a direct flame. The tops of the stills are sealed with bread dough - which sounds weird but is a very traditional process.
Tarquin's Cornish Dry Gin is his take on a London Dry style. 11 botanicals are macerated overnight in a wheat-based spirit - juniper, coriander seed, liquorice root, angelica root, orris root, green cardamom, cinnamon, bitter almonds, orange, lemon and grapefruit peel. So far, so standard gin ingredients. But it's the addition of violet petals from Devon at the last minute - that would otherwise turn to mush - that adds an extra sweet floral note to the gin. The citrus and juniper is forward but well balanced, without one overpowering the other. The floral note arrives halfway through, with just a touch of lemon sherbet sweetness coming through. It's a lovely gin in the classic sense - no mucking about with flavours, just solid, dependable spirit that will work with a mixer, in a cocktail or even drink neat on it's own.

Shipping rates are based on WEIGHT of goods - the total weight of your order will determine the cost of the shipping charge due to price banding imposed by Royal Mail. Orders weighing up to a max of 2kg will be charged £5.99, and orders weighing over 2kg will be charged £7.99. ANY PURCHASE OVER £150 WILL RECEIVE FREE SHIPPING.
PLEASE NOTE: The Spirit Specialist is CLOSED on Sundays and Mondays - all orders are collected by Royal Mail the day after they are packaged up. As such, if you place an order on a Saturday, Sunday or Monday, your order will be packaged up on the following Tuesday at re-opening, and then collected by Royal Mail on the Wednesday morning. PLEASE BEAR THIS IN MIND IF YOU ARE WORKING TO A DEADLINE!

All orders are sent on a Tracked service with Royal Mail, which provides a Tracking Number for you to follow its journey to your destination.

All products are securely packaged in Air-Shock bottle bags or frankly excessive amounts of bubble wrap for additional protection.
All goods must be examined at the time of delivery and any damages or shortage must be recorded on the relevant delivery acceptance forms with the delivery. Un-examined or un-checked goods that result in a subsequent claim outside of a 48 hour period will not be accepted. Queries relating to claims must be made within 48 hours of receiving the goods, otherwise claims cannot be guaranteed.
