Torabhaig

The Torabhaig Distillery is sited in a converted farmstead on the South East of the Isle of Skye. It’s only the second distillery to be licensed on the island – the first being the very well known and highly regarded Talisker.

The distillery was set up by Marussia Beverages, a drinks distributor who also created the Mossburn brand of independently bottled whiskies, and has been operational since January 2017. A team of experienced brewers, distillers and malters were brought on board to mentor a team of nine apprentices, most who are from the local area, who would become the distilling team in their own right.

Named after the burn that flows down the side of the distillery in Teangue, on the Isle of Skye, Torabhaig Allt Gleann is bottled in small batches at 46% ABV, drawn from no more than 30 casks that were originally distilled in both 2017 and 2018. The phenol content of the Concerto and Laureat barley is initially around 77ppm, but this reduces during the distillation process to become a residual level of 17ppm, before a period of maturation in both first-fill Bourbon barrels and what is daftly named 're-fill whisky barrels'. I mean, this is pretty much meaningless, so I'm going to assume these are casks previously used to produce the Mossburn blended malt bottlings?
