Twin Fin Spiced Rum 38% 70cl
Based just 20 minutes North-east of Newquay, the Southwestern Distillery was founded by Tarquin Leadbetter in 2012. Previously a classically trained chef, Tarquin left a desk job in London to pursue a dream of opening the first distillery in his homeland of Cornwall for over 100 years.
Recognising the growth of gin at the time, Tarquin is completely self-taught, selling his first bottle of gin in July 2013. His first still was originally heated with a large gas ring that was used for his paella pan - the operation now has 4 stills (named Tamara, Senara, Tressa and Ferrara) that are all heated with a direct flame. The tops of the stills are sealed with bread dough - which sounds weird but is a very traditional process.
Twin Fin is a foray into rum production which launched in May 2020. As the gorgeous bottle states, this is a rum that encompasses 'Caribbean to Cornwall' - Jamaican pot still rum and a lighter column still rum from the Dominican Republic are infused in Cornwall with a 'secret' blend of spices that includes orange peel and vanilla. A small amount of Pedro Ximenez Sherry is also added to increase depth and richness, before a resting period over charred oak chips, supposedly to add 'warmth'.
My word this is BRILLIANT. A variety of flavours ebb and flow, dancing amongst each other in absolute harmony - fresh orange peel, butterscotch, toffee, icing sugar, sweet cinnamon, raisins, pineapple, even a touch of that charred oak - this is stunning. It's a great spiced rum to sip when lightly chilled on a sunny evening, but weirdly it appears to be absolutely tailor made for Coca Cola - on multiple times I've combined the two and they just work so well together.
