Two Lasses

Founded by Rebecca Allinson and Lindsey Harrison in November 2021, Two Lasses is a new brand of rum that's doing things a little differently. Now there are plenty of 'British' rums that source their liquid from the Caribbean before working on them on these shores and claiming them as their own - but there aren't that many on these shores actually making the spirit from scratch. In this case, we have a molasses-based rum actually made in the UK, before the likes of honey and ginger are macerated to produce a warming spiced version. (Something to note though - although it says 'Yorkshire Spiced Rum' on the label, the base spirit is made outside of God's Country, but the honey is sourced from Haworth and the flavour profile is based on Yorkshire Parkin cake, and the two lasses have been heavily involved in all aspects of production, even down to the type and time of fermentation).

The nose offers a pronounced, almost concentrated aroma of gingerbread or the classic Parkin cake. The honey does come through, but there's also a minty note that follows through onto the palate. The gingerbread comes back alongside notes of dark chocolate but there's still a fresh yet spicy feel throughout, which reminds me somewhat of spearmint Softmints, weirdly. It's a complex and thoroughly enjoyable spiced rum that will be intriguing in a variety of cocktails!
