Valentian
Valentian Rosso Vermouth 18% 75cl
Valentian Vermouth was created by brothers David & Dominic Tait in 2019 in the Borders region – the most Northerly point of the Roman Empire’s reach. It's named after Valentia, a region between Hadrian’s Wall and the Wall of Antonine (built 20 years after Hadrian’s). After initial success of the brand, additional crowdfunding raised £120,000 in 2021 to set a new ‘home’ for Vermouth in Scotland.
Their father George was part of the team that set up the Borders Distillery in Hawick and both sons had already been involved in the drinks industry. As a result, wines from Piedmont are infused with botanicals from both Italy and Scotland along with new-make Barley spirit from the nearby distillery.
That new make element provides a warm note to the 'bassline' of the Vermouth, working brilliantly with the dry red fruit from the wines. There's a soft bittersweet edge but this is extremely pleasant to drink neat, or in a highball with soda, tonic or sparkling wine. You can also make a 'proper Scottish' Bobby Burns cocktail by using this as your Vermouth and a Scotch whisky liqueur such as Bruadar instead of Benedictine!
