Vecchia Romagna
Vecchia Romagna Riserva Tre Botti 40.8% 70cl
Vecchia Romagna dates back to 1820, when Master Distiller Jean Buton moved from France to Italy during the collapse of the Napoleon empire, opening a distillery in Bologna. They proudly proclaim this is 'ITALY'S NO.1 BRANDY' - but to be fair there is some truth to the matter. The Etichetta Nera (Black Label) is the biggest selling Italian brandy by some way, and it's highly likely you'll see that in your local Italian restaurants, and maybe even this bottling in higher end establishments.
Vecchia Romagna was launched in 1939, and is distilled from Trebbiano grapes, also known as Ugni Blanc in France, which are the grapes used to produce Cognac.
Tre Botti - or 'three barrels' - is a marriage of brandies aged up to 15 years in three different types of cask: French oak barriques, large Slavonian oak casks (Slavonia is a region in north-eastern Croatia and this type of oak is very popular in Italian winemaking) and Tonneaux barrels - those that have previously aged Italian red wines.
That last element provides a fruity note of red berries to the spirit, which remains soft and silky, with a nice spicy note of warm oak popping up regularly - making it perfect to enjoy after a good meal of meaty ragu and rich pasta.
