'Speymalt' is the brand name of any Macallan that has been released from independent maturers Gordon & MacPhail. Based in Elgin, G&M purchase new make spirit direct from distilleries and mature in their own selection of casks, thanks to over 100 years of relationships built up with distilleries, wineries and bodegas.
Impeccable care and attention is taken to ensure the whisky is of the highest quality, and on a regular occasion you can find some absolute bargains compared to 'official' releases, due to the fact they are often perceived as 'inferior' releases due to the lack of any official branding. As it happens, the liquid is often way better than mainstream bottlings, and G&M price their releases at a level which encourages drinking and enjoying rather than setting aside to make money.
As is the case with this particular release, which is a 2005 distillate matured entirely in first-fill Oloroso Sherry casks and bottled in 2019 - the exact dates aren't known but it's a safe bet to assume this is a 14 year old.
Macallan can sometimes come across a little one-note and 'flat', but that's certainly what we find here, with a lovely balance of sweet fruit and spicy oak. There's just a hint of candied citrus peel and the merest hint of peppercorns on the finish. To be honest the 43% ABV maybe does it a slight disservice, but only by a couple of percentage points - I certainly don't think it would want to be any higher than 46% and we're not far off perfection here anyway.
This bottling shows all the high points of Macallan without any of the flabbiness that can be found in 'limited edition' official releases.
